Bear spray is forbidden in Yosemite

While it is illegal to bring bear spray into Yosemite, it is not illegal to have one. Unlike grizzly bears, which are native to North America, black bears are unable to access human food. They feed on grasses, nuts, and berries. You may also see a black bear standing on its hind legs, just to get a better look at you.

If you see a bear in Yosemite, report it to a park ranger. If you encounter a bear, try to hike in a group to reduce the likelihood of having a close encounter. Large groups make more noise than individuals, so there is less chance of an unexpected run-in. If you plan on staying overnight in Yosemite, you will need bear resistant food containers. Sadly, counterbalance food hangs are no longer legal in the park, so bear canisters are the only effective way to keep a bear from getting into your food.

The National Park Service has prohibited the use of bear spray in Yosemite. Nonetheless, bear spray is legal in other parks, including Yellowstone and Glacier. Using bear spray while hiking in Banff is illegal in the Canadian park, and if you are caught with it, you could be fined up to $25,000.
